WP Rocket made my test site 47% faster
Before I talk about the features of WP Rocket or show you the interface, I want to show you more about the stats of one of my sites, this should motivate you to continue reading my WP Rocket review:
On my test site hosted on shared hosting O2switch cheap (72€ per year - very good value for money!), WP Rocket was able to reduce the page load time from 1.5 seconds to 0.8 seconds. ( I strongly recommend O2switch as a wordpress hosting, management is done via a cpanel dashboard, ssl deployment is ultra simple with lets encrypt, installing wordpress is a breeze with softaculous wordpress installation in 2 min, automated backup, unlimited mysql database, unlimited storage, nginx, anti spam filter, addresses emails unlimited.....
In case you don't have a calculator handy, this means that WP Rocket made my test site 47% faster ! Not only did it improve raw page load times, but it also reduced the file size by 17% and reduced the number of HTTP requests from 21 to 18.

I also advise you to test the loading speed of a url with Google's pagespeed tool. Page Speed will give you an overview of the loading speed of your wordpress sites for desktop and mobile.
WP Rocket : Features that speed up your site
WP Rocket presents itself as a caching plugin, but it actually performs many small optimizations that go beyond simple caching.
While other caching plugins also do this (e.g. W3 Total Cache), WP Rocket does not really require any configuration.
If you've ever tried to configure the monstrosity that is W3 Total Cache... WP-Rocket is really very different and much simpler.
That doesn't mean you won't have to configure anything. It just means that you don't especially need to.
Basically, just clicking on Enable will speed up most sites considerably.
What does WP Rocket do?
By default, it does these 5 things as soon as you activate it:
- Page caching (static cache of HTML files)
- Browser caching (on Apache, if available on the server)
- GZIP compression (on Apache, if available on the server)
- Cross support for web fonts (on Apache)
- Detection and support of various plugins, themes and third-party hosting environments.
Then you can use the settings area to control :
- Cache preloading - this helps you 'build' the cache so that your site is always fast.
- Minification/concatenation - this allows you to reduce and combine your CSS/JS files.
- Remove query strings from static resources
- Lazy Loading - this delays the loading of images or videos until the user starts to scroll down the page (this will significantly increase the loading of pages with images).
- Postpone JS loading
- Disable emojis/embeds
- Combining Google Font Files
How the WP Rocket Tutorial / Config interface works
As soon as you activate WP Rocket, it will automatically implement the features I listed above to start speeding up your site...which is very clear in the interface :
This interface is from WP Rocket 3.3.7, so if you read an older review of WP Rocket before this one, you may notice that things look a little different.
The main dashboard page allows you to quickly clear your cache or preload your cache (more on this in a second). To configure more advanced settings for WP Rocket, you'll use the sidebar.
Let's review each configuration area....
Cache - Basic cache options
The Cache tab allows you to control the caching of your pages at a basic level:
- Include/exclude mobile users from viewing cached pages (responsive page management).
- Include/exclude logged-in users from cached pages.
- Enable caching on HTTPS pages.
- Choose how long a page remains cached before the cache is cleared (default is 10 hours).
In most cases, you can leave these values as default.
File optimization - Minification and concatenation
The tab File optimization is where you can configure the minification and concatenation functions of WP Rocket :
- Minification - reduces the size of your site's code by removing unnecessary characters (such as white space) without changing any functionality.
- Concatenation - reduces the number of files on your site by combining multiple CSS/JS files into one.
You can also configure other settings such as :
- Eliminate CSS/JS rendering blocking (PageSpeed Insights is notoriously harsh on this issue).
- Combination of Google font files (useful if you use multiple Google fonts on your site).
- Remove query strings from static resources (this will not have a big effect, but it may improve your GTmetrix score, if you are interested).
I recommend enabling as many of these settings as possible. I say "as much as possible" because some settings for CSS or JS can cause problems with your site (this is not WP Rocket's fault - it's always a potential problem with minification/concatenation).
What I like is that WP Rocket makes it clear when you are going to activate one of these settings:

Media - Lazyload
In the Media tab, you can enable Lazyload of images and/or videos, as well as disable emojis and WordPress inserts.
One feature that is really nice is the option to replace YouTube video iframes with a static preview image. If you embed a lot of YouTube videos on your site, this is a great way to speed up your site without sacrificing much, if any, usability:
Preloading - Preloading your cache file
Without preloading, your site only "builds" the cache of a page when someone actually visits the page. This means that the first visitor after the cache lifetime has expired does not see the cached version (because the cache has not yet been built).
Preloading the cache allows you to ensure that all visitors see the fast-loading cached page by "preloading" the cache yourself, rather than waiting for someone to visit the page.
One of the advantages of WP Rocket is that it gives you two different ways to preload your cache, whereas some cache plugins don't even offer one:
- Sitemap preloading - preloads your cache based on all the pages in your sitemap.xml file. Its impact is small, but its drawback is that it does not cache newly published or edited posts.
- Preloading of specific urls
You can choose to use several methods to preload your cache, depending on your needs:
Advanced rules - For advanced users
If you are a casual user, you will probably never need to consult this section. But for more advanced users, the Advanced Rules area gives you more control over how your cache works for specific URLs, cookies, user-agents, etc.
For example, you can :
- Exclude individual content from your site from being cached (including the use of wildcards)
- Specify certain cookies or user-agents to be excluded from caching
Basically - not something most users will need, but useful for advanced users who like to get their hands dirty.
Database - Clean up your database
As your site ages, your database will pick up all sorts of "junk" in the form of revisions, comments, transients, etc.
This area allows you to remove all that useless stuff from your database with a single click:

Personally, I find this the least exciting area of WP Rocket because there are many free plugins that do a great job of cleaning up your database. But I guess the main advantage here is that WP Rocket eliminates the need to install a separate plugin.
CDN - Integrating your CDN
If you use a CDN to speed up the delivery of your site, WP Rocket can help you:
- Rewrite your URLs to use your CDN
- Exclude certain files from your CDN
While you can find free plugins to do the first part, the second part, plus the fact that you can reserve CNAMEs for specific file types, gives you more flexibility than other free plugins:
For example, you could use one CNAME for your images, and another for the rest of your files.
