How does dropshipping with Shopify work?
I bet the term dropshipping is not completely foreign to you. Over the past few years, it has become an integral part of the online business world, so much so that it is now a must. The word "direct delivery" is an online sales method in which the merchant dispenses with the manufacturing, stock management and shipping of items. In other words, the supplier is the one who takes care of sending the products purchased by the customer.
To find this type of partner, there are a multitude of sites. I can mention for example AliExpress, Best Buy and CjDropshipping. Unfortunately, running an online business is not just about finding the right supplier. You also need to have a shop where you can display your products. Currently, one of the best options I would advise you to use is Shopify.
Obviously, there are many CMS's you can turn to. However, this SaaS solution is really exceptional for dropshipping. This is the main reason why I recommend it. To enjoy the benefits of Shopify, you need to sign up for a monthly plan, which will give you access to the site to build your online shop. In addition, you will benefit from a 14 day trial period which will help you generate your first money, if you successfully set up your Shopify dropshipping business.
How to use dropshipping with Shopify to grow your e-commerce business?
Dropshipping with Shopify to grow your online shop is possible. I'll take you through the different steps to follow to make your project a success.
Select a niche product to offer to buyers
If you are good with your ten fingers, you can count yourself lucky. To set up your project, you can skip several steps that we will see later. If not, I can tell you that finding the items to sell in your online shop will be the hardest part of your online business.
Your goal is to find an original or new product for which there is no demand. What would be exceptional is to sell an innovative item that nobody knows about yet, but which impresses. If you opt for this strategy, you have to keep up to date with the latest releases, which can be quite exhausting I admit.
If you are not planning to go for new releases, there are techniques and tools I can suggest to get your marketing niche. Here, however, you will need some marketing knowledge. If you don't have any, you just need to take some online courses. That way you will know how to conduct market research to determine which products could potentially generate online sales.
Choose a strong brand name
One of the must-haves when you start dropshipping online is the name of your online shop or brand. The name of your e-business is very important. It is the one that your buyers will remember and tell their friends. Your e-business name will appear on Google, on your website and on your online marketing materials. You need to make sure that it is memorable to customers, that it is SEO friendly and that it matches the services you offer.
It can be difficult to find company names that are not already taken. So, ideally, you should do some online research to rule out some of the ideas you have written down in a little notebook. Alternatively, there are online business name generators which I have used many times. If you want to save yourself the hassle, ideally you should go with Shopify's suggestions.
When creating my dropshipping Shopify, I first took into account the target audience which was mainly young and trendy, and therefore potentially comfortable with the English language. That's why I automatically opted for an English-speaking name. To put it in context, I wanted to offer pairs of shoes customised to the buyer's preferences. The idea of using "custom shoes" was not interesting, so I opted for "customized shoes". However, this was generic and not very interesting from an SEO point of view. I then tried to use "Customized Shoes Store" which was fine for SEO, but didn't make much of an impact. After a bit of digging, I finally settled on "DIY Shoes Store". After this result, I did a little research which confirmed the availability of the domain name. Here's a quick tip on how to find a name for your Shopify dropshipping business.
Create an account on the SaaS platform
I would like to remind you first of all that Shopify allows you to enjoy a free online shop for 14 days. In order to take advantage of this CMS benefit, you must have found the right products before opening your profile. To do this, you need to go to the Shopify login page. Once there, you need to enter your email address, a password and the brand name you have chosen.
Next, you will have to answer a number of questions asked by the platform to provide you with an interface that meets all your needs. Specify that you are a beginner and that you do not sell any products yet, then click on "Next". In case you already have a physical shop, you must mention it and then enter your turnover.
Shopify will ask you to enter a postal address, which is what the public will see. After this step, you can click on "register my online shop". After this step, you will have access to a Shopify dropshipping platform with a random theme. I inform you that it will be up to you to configure everything to have an attractive and successful online shop.
Opt for an attractive theme for your Shopify dropshipping e-store
One of the reasons I like Shopify is that it offers a multitude of free themes that you can use to set up your Shopify dropshipping platform. If you don't have the money to buy paid themes, you can simply visit the theme gallery. To do this, you'll need to go to the 'Customise Theme' section on the homepage of your Shopify site.
When you are in the library, click on "Discover free themes". With your SaaS solution, I can tell you that you will have two interesting options to select your theme. Depending on your preferences, you can sort them by collection or by sector.
By going to the "Collection" tab, you will have access to a set of themes classified according to their design and popularity. The 'Industries' tab offers themes that are relevant to your field of activity. Therefore, you will find templates for technology, clothing, gardening, interior design, baby items, etc.
Finally, the "All themes" option allows you to filter more precisely. If you don't have the money to adopt paid visuals, this tab will help you display the free themes.
Improve your dropshipping platform with Shopify
Whatever theme you choose, I'm willing to bet you'd like to customize it. Shopify offers the possibility to do just that with its easy to use interface. You can add your logo, configure your menu, insert images on your homepage, offer slideshows, enhance collections, customize the platform's colours or create a newsletter.
In order to successfully promote your platform, I suggest that you modify the home page. On this page, you should add many elements that will help the buyer feel confident as soon as he lands on your online shop. These include: important products, slideshows, partner logos, testimonials, trust badges and blog posts.
Apart from the homepage, I recommend you add two additional pages. One for the legal information that is essential for a sales shop and the other for the presentation of your dropshipping platform (Who we are or About us). If the first page is intended to reassure buyers and to comply with French law, the second page will allow you to promote your brand and explain what it has that other companies do not.
Importing items onto your dropshipping platform
The process for importing items to your dropshipping shop differs, depending on whether you use a Shopify application or not. If you decide to use a specialised software, you will be able to create your platform in a very short time. Some solutions allow you to browse through the AliExpress catalogue of references to select the items you like and edit them in the import list.
Only, when you don't want to explore this, you have to proceed with the manual import by filling in the corresponding fields with the right information. If you are planning to design a large Shopify dropshipping shop, I warn you that this option is repetitive and exhausting. However, if you only have a few items, you can simply go to the home page of your interface and click on the "Products" section.
At this level, you must enter the title of the item, its description, its images, its price, its availability and its variants. For each of these items, I recommend that you be as specific as possible. For the product description and title, it is best to use optimised terms to ensure that buyers can easily find what they are looking for.
Selecting payment solutions
I don't need to stress how crucial it is to ensure that the customer can pay for their orders. When you use dropshipping with Shopify to develop your online shop, you need to ensure that your solutions are safe for buyers. To configure the payment settings, you need to go to the left menu. In the dashboard of your platform, you need to select "Settings" and "Payment Providers".
You will then be able to choose the payment providers that will be allowed in your online shop. Here are some examples of what your SaaS solution offers:
- Amazon Pay
Setting up the domain name
I generally recommend using your own web domain name. If you don't have one, Shopify will display your online shop URL in this format by default: https://your-store-name.myshopify.com/. I do not recommend using this unprofessional version of the domain name. That is why I insist on using your own domain name.
To get recommended suggestions, go to your dashboard and click on 'Online Store'. This will give you access to three different ways to connect your Shopify account with your own domain name.
If you already have your own domain, you can use it to connect to your Shopify dropshipping shop. I should point out that this process varies between domain providers. The best advice I can offer is to go to the help page for more information on this. Also, you can contact your domain provider for information.
In addition, you have the option to transfer your web domain to Shopify. This will allow you to manage, pay and renew your domain. If you use this solution, I recommend that you check with your SaaS platform and domain provider to ensure that everything is set up correctly.
If you don't have a domain yet, Shopify offers you the opportunity to own one. Typically, the cost of obtaining a custom domain name starts at $11 per year. I suggest you consider this option.
Shopify dropshipping with Oberlo
Oberlo is an application available in the Shopify software store. If you are a beginner in dropshipping, this is a solution that will be very useful. Its integration is easy and you will be able to get the hang of it quite easily.
In order to use this application, go to the "Product" menu on your platform interface. Choose "More Actions" and "Search for other products to sell". These selections will naturally lead you to the Oberlo application. There you can find products and suppliers using the search bar.
By scrolling through the results, you will find a few items that may be of interest to you. If you manage to find a few items that are perfect for your shop, simply click on the 'select product' option. You will be taken to a product page that will show you the cost of supply, shipping costs and a field where you can enter your selling price. If you like the item you see, you can click on "Add Product". This will add the selected product to your stock.
When you make a sale, the Oberlo application handles all aspects of the order. In addition, the software constantly updates the quantities and prices of products in stock. So you'll never be caught off guard when it comes to satisfying a customer. Finally, Oberlo offers features for editing your item names, descriptions and images.
To conclude, dropshipping with Shopify to develop your e-commerce shop is a great way to make income through online business. To make money with this solution, follow the various tips I have offered here.
